Clueless

Here we are in 2006
Shoved in your Cadillac with ashtrays
Eastbound to the city

When we did things for fun
We just did things for fun

Cheerfully into the sunset
Full of misguided hopes and
Fall Out Boy quotes and

Stories and worlds never held to
Scrutiny, never challenged,
Never noticed

But, there was something
In the low lights of August
Thinning your mom’s liquor
When they noticed

Cicero’s and the smell of
Smoke
Load in load out
Parking lots at 2 a.m.

Mom said nothing
But I said every thought
That came to my head

And fell in love

Barbs in my abdomen
Lost in ignorance and
Cruelty
Tempered with bronze sunset

Tempered with the long nights
Snuck out to your porch and
Couldn’t guess what would happen next
Couldn’t guess, clueless,

Funnier now, but
How strange and fleeting

Turkish Royals on the dash
“Just now and then”
“Not often, just to relax”

How funny
In the basement when we first heard it
When we first felt it

Young hearts
Eastbound to the show
